Guide · Tally to Odoo
Moving from Tally to Odoo: what moves, and how we check it.
The first worry is always the same: will the numbers still match? This page shows what we move across, what we check before you rely on it, and what stays with your accountant.
Moves across
Five things we load into Odoo.
You pick a date. We bring your books across as they stood at the end of that day.
- Customers and vendors, with their GST numbers and addresses
- Items, with HSN codes, units and GST rates
- Opening stock, godown by godown
- Opening balances of your ledgers
- Unpaid customer and vendor bills, one by one with their due dates, so the ageing report works from the first day
Stays behind
What does not come across.
We only read exports from Tally. Your Tally company is never changed, and you can keep it for reference as long as you like.
- Past vouchers, year by year. Odoo starts from the opening balances and unpaid bills at your chosen date.
- Tally's own report layouts, and any custom screens that were added to your Tally.
- Anything you keep in Excel and do not give us.
How it runs
Four steps, and nothing goes live until your accountant signs.
-
1
Before the project
One real export, tested
We ask for one real export from your Tally, with names and amounts blanked if you like, and check that our loader reads it correctly. Tally writes its reports in different layouts depending on the version and the settings, so we look at yours first.

2
Weeks 1 to 3
We load a test copy
Everything goes into a test copy of Odoo, never into live data. If something does not read properly, we stop and tell you instead of guessing.
-
3
Before go-live
You get a checking sheet
Trial balance account by account, stock item by item, unpaid bills party by party: Tally on one side, Odoo on the other, and the difference. We also list what looks wrong in the source, and you decide each one.
-
4
Sign-off
Your accountant signs it
Your accountant checks the sheet against Tally and signs it. Only then do we load the live system.
What goes wrong
Three things we find in almost every Tally file.
None of them is a disaster. They are only a problem when nobody looks.
Names that look the same
"Patel Auto Parts", "M/s Patel Auto Parts" and "PATEL AUTO PARTS." can be one customer or three. We list every pair we find, and you tell us which are the same.
Stock below zero
When a sale was entered before the purchase, Tally shows negative stock. We flag every such item, so you can fix the entry or accept it before Odoo carries it forward.
A year that is not closed
Tally does not close the books by itself, so a trial balance still holds the year's income and expenses. We ask your accountant for the figures after the year-end entries, and for the stock value from your Stock Summary.
Also on the list: a customer marked as registered but with no GST number, and an item with no HSN code. See how a made-up company's data was moved and checked →
How long does a Tally to Odoo migration take?
One to three weeks, depending on how clean your data is. It sits inside the 30-day plan for the Starter ERP, and you can also buy it on its own.
Do we have to stop using Tally on day one?
No. Many owners run both for a short while to check that the numbers agree. We plan the switch with you and your accountant, and we do not ask you to drop Tally until you are comfortable.
Will we lose our old years' data?
No. We only read exports from Tally, and your Tally company stays exactly as it is. Odoo starts from your opening balances and unpaid bills at the date you choose.
Can you move our data from Excel instead of Tally?
Yes. Customers, items, opening stock and balances can come from Excel sheets. We agree the layout of the sheets with you first.
What do you need from us to start?
A recent Tally backup or exports (we show you the steps), the date you want to start from, and some of your accountant's time to go through the checking sheet.
What happens to our data after the project?
We delete our working copies when the project ends, unless you ask us to keep them so that we can support you.
